How Music Retrains the Brain of the Struggling Reader

Dr. Marianne Cintron, creator of Step By Step Dyslexia Solutions, outlines how the Step By Step program’s use of music retrains the brains of struggling readers. Dr. Cintron has successfully implemented the program in the Pomona Unified School District and now offers training for teachers, tutors, and family members too.

During our interview of Dr. Cintron, attendees will learn:

The Speaker/Interviewee:

Dr. Marianne Cintron, E.D.D., MAEd, MASPED

Dr. Marianne Cintron created and has successfully implemented the Step By Step program for over 5 years. Most recently, the program has been implemented in the Pomona Unified School District, where it will be offered again due to excellent results. Dr. Cintron has been special education teacher whose concerns with children having reading difficulties led her to pursue doctoral research regarding techniques that promise to retrain neurological function and improve reading skill. Soon to be a certified Orton Gillingham practitioner, Dr. Cintron also holds credentials for Educational Specialist, Mild to Moderate, and Multiple-Subject Teaching as well as Masters in Special Education, and an E.D.D. in educational leadership/administration. Maria Davis-Perkins, PhD., M.A., Sp-CCC.

Dr. Maria Davis-Perkins has published and presented on topics that have included: student engagement; tapping neuro-linguistic skills to ease the writing process and build student confidence; the language of effective teaching; and selecting literature appropriate to developmental age. Her professional experiences include: co-creator of the Talk/Write (Using Talk to Write) workshops and pilot; educational consultant to high school staff; speech-language specialist in schools as well as hospitals; co-creator of the Kaiser cognitive-computer lab; speech-language pathologist – private sector; high school English teacher; and Speech/Debate coach.
