This live-streamed event will take you through a series of steps to assess, prioritize, and teach effectively writing conventions such as tense errors, pronoun usage, punctuation etc. As an example, the instructor uses procedures that ultimately target tense errors in a student’s essay.
Registrants will receive downloadable materials to use for their own assessments and interventions.
The first two registrants attending the live-streamed workshop will receive a reduced rate for a one hour consult. During the consult, a submitted persuasive essay will be evaluated and targets for intervention prioritized.
By the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:
- Determine the writing convention that most affects the clarity of a student’s writing.
- Identify and prioritize at least two skills that should be taught to the student.
- Refer to a sequence of steps necessary for creating a student-centered approach to instruction.
About the Speaker: Maria Davis-Perkins, PhD., M.A., Sp-CCC
Dr. Davis-Perkins has authored and presented on subjects that include: tapping student cognitive linguistic skills to improve written expression and confidence in writing skills; engaging students in academic tasks; and engaging parents of students classified as English Language Learners. Her professional experiences have included: high school English teacher; educational consultant to high school staff; intern supervisor; co-creator of Kaiser Fontana’s cognitive-computer lab; as well as speech-language pathologist in schools, hospitals, and in the private sector. Her research interests include: academic literacy and language skills, the neurological basis of reading and writing development, second language acquisition and its impact on literacy learning; research methods appropriate to assessing intervention effectiveness.
